I made Bay of Herons as a form of self-discovery and expression. A driving factor for my work has always been the brutal truth that our people have intentionally erased from our lands. Our existence in this place is invisible; our story, languages, lives, love, and immeasurable sacrifice have been forgotten by those who have continually benefitted from exploiting the natural world for generations. This truth is a burden not unique to the Wabanaki but is the common thread that weaves together the diaspora of Indigenous people globally. Despite this, a parallel truth exists; we are this place, made in its image, inseparable, and forever tethered.
Bay of Herons is a film aggregating several veins of introspection, creative outlets, and existentialist perspectives. During the making of this film, the process became meditative and healing for me in a multitude of ways. It allowed me to channel my creativity into a form of expression that uniquely encapsulated all of the various modalities I find myself working in as an artist and form a deeper connection with my ancestors.
