A visceral and intimate reflection on a Mi'kmaq family's multigenerational experience of assimilation, told through a collage of archival footage and sonic exploration.
Framed through a free form written narration, dream-like archival footage, and hypnotic sonic fields of sensory immersion, For a Moment the Clouds Parted and I Felt the Sun, is a ruminating exploration of Lank’s relationship to American assimilation, starting with his great-grandparents decision to leave their Mi’kmaq reservation in Nova Scotia in the 1940s to become farm hands in Aroostook county, Maine. Touching on themes of cultural loss, ecological decline, and erosion of identity, Lank offers an emic perspective into the joy and sorrow experienced in the daily life of a family reconciling past and future with the immense pressure of the present. In a meandering, non-linear telling, the film contrasts deep archival memory with contemporary parallels, revealing the spiraling repetition of time and intergenerational power of self narratives to build and destroy.
