Holding the Light : Contemporary Wabanaki Photography

2026 | Travelling Group Exhibition
Still Image, Cyanotype, Single Channel Video

Driven by a central questioning of photography as a tool of documentation and art as witness to the contemporary life of a Mi’kmaq person, I chose to bring a small selection of work to be in conversation with other artists in the show, looking at both still and moving image as ways to externalize the self and bring my own lived experience into relation with my family’s broader myth.
“What does it look like when Wabanaki artists turn the camera on their own lives, their own land, and their own faces? Holding the Light: Contemporary Wabanaki Photography gathers eight answers to that question from eight photographers: Maya Tihtiyas Attean, Nolan Altvater, Danikah Chartier, Nate Gaffney, Jared Lank, Ann Pollard Ranco, Lokotah Sanborn, and Desmond Simon. With still photography, film, wall installations, and cyanotype, these images come together to make an argument that is quiet, precise, and unmistakable: that Wabanaki cultures are living, contemporary, and being actively shaped by the people who belong to them.” - Abbe Museum

“Working across photography, film, installation, and cyanotype, these artists draw on a long history of Wabanaki visual art and storytelling while using contemporary forms to picture life today. Their work considers land, identity, family, and community, reflecting cultures that are living, evolving, and shaped by the people who belong to them.” - Portland Museum of Art
